Starting a New Chapter

Socrata, the company I founded in 2007 and led since inception, was acquired in April 2018 by Tyler Technologies, becoming Tyler’s Data & Insights division, with me as its president.. In January of this year, I started the process of winding down, working with Tyler’s CEO on a succession plan. In April of this year, I stepped into an evangelist role and promoted Socrata’s VP of Engineering, Franklin Williams, to lead the division. Yesterday the succession process was successfully completed.

After 12 years at the helm as either CEO of a venture-backed company or divisional President of a publicly-traded company, in January of this year I started the deliberate and methodical process of stepping down as the president of Tyler’s Data & Insights division, choosing and mentoring my successor. Taking Stock in People

Over the years I’ve worked with so many smart, resourceful, creative and hard working individuals. Often I would think “I’d like to make an investment in that person,” not in the more common, figurative sense of helping them grow and develop, but more in the literal sense. I’d like to give them some capital to propel them into a successful career or business.
